Background

Antibiotic resistance is a global problem. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has classified carbapenem resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) and Clostridium difficile as urgent antibiotic resistance threats. Various strategies are now being adopted in order to combat the spread of these, including expanded antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention efforts, and adoption of new diagnostics for much faster colonization testing and characterization of multi-drug resistant infections.

Currently, there are not tests available that can satisfy the colonization and infection characterization testing needs for institutions of all sizes in the U.S. The ideal multiplex PCR tests must have the following characteristics:

  • High enough multiplexing to simultaneously target the most relevant gram-negative multi-drug resistance markers and toxigenic C. difficile from a single rectal swab specimen
  • High enough throughput to accommodate institutions that wish to test all admissions for colonization (>200 tests per day)
  • Low enough price point (instrumentation and per test cost) for labs to be able to cost justify testing without relying on reimbursement
  • Customization of panel to select and deselect targets for reporting based on institution testing needs
